Give us an elevator pitch of your show.

Experience the perfect start to your holiday season at Loyola Chapel December 4, 5, 6 and 7 when the Lyric Theatre Singers perform music that evokes the spirit of joy that this time of year brings. For 35 years, Artistic Director Bob Bachelor’s signature blend of timeless and contemporary carols, has been a treasured favorite of Montreal audiences seeking a moment of peace and beauty during the holidays.

What is your favourite part of this production?

On top of the wonderful atmosphere we want to create for audiences who come see the show, Musical Director Bob Bachelor feels it important to create a positive environment for the Singers for whom rehearsals are an important third space. Working together in an upbeat, fun and challenging environment benefits the sound, yes, but also makes for happy Singers, which is vital to the spirit and enduring community that is Lyric.

Why is this show important for audiences to see right now?

Even though day-to-day life continues in many parts of the world, people are affected by the state of things. We hope this concert series can bring some peace and solace, even for a few hours of gathering around good and inspiring live music.

How has the current social or political climate influenced this production?

The current social and political climate has not directly influenced the production, but we are hopeful that the Candlelight Christmas concert experience as a whole will provide a welcome respite from the outside world. For a few hours, through the carefully selected repertoire, and through sharing the light of candles, we hope our audience can unite in reflection and revel in the hope and warmth the season can bring.

What has been this production’s greatest challenge?

Some of the material selected for this year's concert is challenging. The Lyric Theatre Singers have specialized in musical theatre for its Broadway revues, but Christmas music opens up so many different styles, even if they are always performed with the precision and care the Singers bring to all of their performances, this repertoire challenges their focus and musicianship. Special arrangements include renditions of "Twelve Days of Christmas", "There is no Rose" and "Ding-A Ding-A Ding." These three songs, among others, are some challenges Musical Director Bob Bachelor is entrusting the Singers with this year.

How does this production align with your company’s mission or artistic vision?

This year again, after a round of auditions masterfully organized by volunteer Sean Bucholz, The Lyric Theatre Singers have welcomed several new singers. This is in line with our mission to "foster chances for local talents to shine regardless of age or background. Our creative process allows singers to develop their craft under a team of dedicated leaders, promoting arts education and appreciation that last a lifetime." The vocal ensemble ranges from 21 years old to some members in their 70s. This intergenerational diversity is incredibly enriching to all involved.
